DEADLINE

So I know some of you are having a hard time with the portfolio and running into some issues.  I also forgot you guys have reviews tomorrow.  SO, since I'm a nice guy, the deadline for portfolio and CD is until Friday at 5pm in our classroom.

This leaves Thursday's class at 6pm a little more open for anyone having problems.  During class I can help anyone who wants to print, needs help with inDesign or anything else.

Those of you in the Tuesday class are more than welcome to come to class tomorrow night for help.

To those who have already completed or have worked very hard to meet the originally scheduled deadlines, I greatly appreciate it and thank you for working so hard.

CD/DVD SUBMISSION

READ ALL OF THIS POST AND THE ONE AFTER!!!

You will need a CD or DVD with all of your work on it submitted by Thursday to ME or in a place I designate.

I've told you that you will need all of your files for submission since the beginning of the semester so this shouldn't come as a surprise, and you should have all your files for the portfolio anyways.

The CD/DVD!

1. Create a folder for each assignment.
2. Properly label each assignment with their corresponding file.

Example:
                Folder >
                                000_Portfolio
                                001_Assignment
                                002_Assignment
                                                >Files in Assignment folder >
                                                                02.01_FirstNameInitialLastName_dCollage_A.psd
                                                                02.02_FirstNameInitialLastName_dCollage_B.psd

What should I burn these files to?
Burn the files to either a CD or DVD.

When is the CD/DVD due?
It is due on April 28th.

How do label the CD/DVD?
With a marker, write your name, ARCH 1353, and your instructor

Does the CD/DVD need to be in a protective sleeve?
Yes

If I don't turn in a CD/DVD, does it count against my grade?
Yes

What happens if I don't turn in my CD/DVD?
You do not get your grade.

What if I'm missing work and cannot put all of the files on the CD/DVD as requested?
Then you need to complete the work. Chances are you're missing the work so just get it done and it will be on the CD/DVD. If for some reason your computer crashed during the semester, you should've made a backup.

What if I'm sick and cannot turn in the Portfolio and CD/DVD on the due date?
You are require to submit a doctor's note along with your material. If not, then it will be counted as late.

What is the absolute last date to turn everything in and still receive credit, yet be counted off for late submission of the Portfolio and CD/DVD?
The absolute late date is May 3rd.

GOOD LUCK!!!

TUESDAY APRIL 26th CLASS

The deadline for the portfolio submission has been extended to Thursday April 28th.  This mainly only deals with the Tuesday class, but allows today's class to be reserved for anyone that needs printing, binding or portfolio help, so any one in my two sections are welcome to come and have my help.

Tuesday class needs to come tonight.  You have to fill out evaluations, sorry.

Exercise 05

Here are some layout examples I did to give you guys some ideas on how to put together an interesting layout.  There is a general layout example on the class website under assignment 5.

Portrait may be a good choice you, depending on what you want to show, the extention lines here are present in the transformations. Technically, I don't believe you have to include them on this layout but I believe it may add some more visual quality to part 2.  If you do include, you may want to show them on the geometry as well
Here, I added a background change from the supplemental information of the paths ect to the hierarchical final transformations.  This can be a good tool to help divide a layout into component pieces and add some variety as well as emphasize or de-emphasize certain aspects of your layout

For color selection help, click on the image to visit this website.  Search the palettes for color ideas and combinations, and as always, please use judgment when selecting colors.

Illustrator Lineweights Assignment

This assignment is supposed to just introduce the idea of lightweights and AutoCAD.  You can download AutoCAD from the Autodesk website but be forewarned- the download will take a while.  Also, all the lab computers in the architecture building and university library computers should have AutoCAD.

You were instructed to choose a building from a book that I gave in class.  If you need to find the book, it is called "Great Buildings of the 20th Century."  On the white-board in class, there is the call number and all the information you will need to look up the book.

In the book is a CD.  It is in this CD that you will copy the .DWG  file from the appropriate folder index that is located on the last page of the book.

Open this file in AutoCAD.

We are only going to be interested in the section for this assignment.  Make sure you understand how to read the sections.

First things first, select the section in AutoCAD and type "explode."  If your AutoCAD file has fills or poches select them and delete them.  They will not look right when you put them into Illustrator.

To transition into Illustrator just select your section in CAD, then copy it.  Go to Illustrator (make sure you have a new file 11x17) and simply paste your section.

If you have a tall building or a shape that would easier to read in portrait, do that.  (for example a skyscraper or multi-rise)

Now that its in Illustrator use appropriate line-weights.  The section lines should be one of the thickest stroke values.  The other lines and objects in the section should use strokes that are appropriate to how close or far they are.  So lines that are close should have thicker line-weights than those lines that are far in the section.

Also, be sure to fill in the section plane- I think a grey is always nicer than a black fill, but up to you.  To do this, select what you want to fill and "live paint bucket" them.

Here is the example (below) I did in class and you should be aiming towards this type of drawing.  The gradient fill is not required but can add nice touch to simple drawings.  To do this create a simple box and then use the gradient tools around the stroke and layers.  Double click the small boxes of the gradient to change the color from the default black.  You can add entourage if you want, if you do though, use simple outlines of people, not full color people.  You can find tons of stuff like this online.

Here's a link to learn everything about gradients:

Photoshop/ Illustrator Example

Here is the example I did in class.

I used the contextual building information as a guide or process to lay out the composition.  The components of the images emerge form the site image as a play of the idea of "emergent" architecture.  Also there are some organizational techniques present such as solid/void and dense/sparse.

Do not be afraid to use abstraction, but be explicitly confident that can explain why or what the process was.

Collage Assignment

Hello everyone,

So you all have had plenty of time for the collage assignment in which you are supposed to incorporate Illustrator as a new tool to help formulate a dialogue and add compositional structure.

Remember that you are formulating a composition with your images.  Think about the organization structure. For example, you may want to organize a composition using solid vs. opaque , dense vs. sparse, solid vs. void, perspectives, focal points etc...

When inserting vectors onto your Photoshop collages, don't be afraid to extend lines all the way to the edges of the page- these can be seen as construction lines which can help give some visual references within the composition.

So Tuesday class should be submitting the Photoshop and Illustrator Collage assignment tomorrow, the 1st, and Thursday class will be submitting on the 3rd.

Here is the website I showed you guys with some very impressive architectural collages:

(notice how the organization structure is very clear and readable- they chose to use a perspective organizational structure which thus creates a focal point.  Also, the components themselves are arranged together in such a way as to it blurs the lines as to what is an individual object and what creates a cohesive compositional dialogue )
